   What is short story?
                                  

       Story - telling is an ancient art form, we know very well that from our childhood, we like to listen different kinds of stories like,પંચતંત્ર,પરીઓનીવાર્તા (Fairy Tales), ભુતપ્રેત (Stories of Ghost), રાજકુમાર(Stories of prince and princesses)  Mahabharata and Ramayana, from our  grandparents, and teachers. Stories give us pleasure and moral of life.

                   

                   Literature gives us pleasure and beauty. It reflects culture, emotion and thought of contemporary society. The short story as a literature forms give us all the things. It gives pleasure to readers. Short story is one of the oldest types of literature and a favourite form of contemporary society. It attracts attention of almost all the people of different age groups because it has not long narratives and we can complete it in one sitting.

      In short story there are only 3000 to 15,000 words. A short story is a brief work of literature, written in prose. In short story we meet people for a few minutes and see them in a new relationship and it involves our self in it.

        Recently I have read one short story book "polytechnic" which is written by Gujarati Short story writer and critic pro. Mahendrasinh Parmar and some short stories written by Ram Mori. Mahedrasinh Parmar wrote many stories in his book which reflect the Contemporary problem of our society. Both Mahedrasinh Parmar and Ram Mori are Great short story writers in Gujarati language. Their stories have deep satire to the mental illness of society.

 History and definition of short stories:

      Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809. He was the first short story writer and known as “The Father of short story”. The form of short story has been started in America in 1830 and spread in England, France and Europe.

   -    According to Edgar Allan Poe "The Short story is a prose narrative requires one or two hours in its perusal".

   -    The short story is a story that can be read at a single sitting.
   -. Ii is a story which is a short.

   - In the other words the story differs from the length of novel.

      

I have studied many Short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe like,
       1) The tell- tale heart
   2) The black cat    3) The cask of Amontillado
   4) The fall of the house of Usher
   5)The Gold bug
   6) The purloined letter
       So we can say that Short story gives us more pleasure in limited and minimum words. This is important literary form to get the pleasure. Short story tells ancient stories and this is medium by which we get moral lessons for examples "Panchtarntras" stories. It gives us moral of our life and pleasure.
