stream of consciousness

In literary criticism stream of consciousness is a narrative mode or device that seeks "To depict the multitudinous thought and feelings which pass through the mind.

The term was coined by William James in 1890 in his The Principle of Psychology. In 1918 May Sinclair first applied the term Stream of consciousness in a literary context when discussing Dorothy Richardson novels.

Definition:

In literature Stream of consciousness is method of narration that describe in words flow of thoughts in the mind of Character interior monologue The term is often used a synonym for interior monologue but they can also famous in two way.

In the first sense The stream of consciousness is the subject matter  while interior Monologue is the technique for presenting it. Thus Marcel Proust's novel "A la recherche temps predu" is about the Stream of consciousness especially the connection between sense and impressions and memory but it does not actually use interior monologue.

In the second sense stream of consciousness special style of interior monologue always present a character's thought directly.

Without the apparent invention of summarizing and selecting narrator it does not necessary violate the norms of grammar, syntax and logic but the stream of consciousness technique also does one or both of these things.

An important device of Modernist fiction and its later limitations the technique way pioneered by Dorothy Richardson in Pilgrimage.

James Joyce in Ulayses (1922) and further develop by Virginia Woolf in Mrs Dolloway (1925), To The lighthouse and William Faulkner in sound and Fury (1928).
