Recently I have attended a Seminar on the Gujrati poet and playwright Labhshankar Thakar. In this seminar I heard the name of his plays and I thought to read it.Which are following.
૧)વૃક્ષ
૨)તરંગપાલ
૩)આપણે રસ્તો ચુકયા જ નથી
૪)કાહે કોયલ મચાયે રે
૫)કપ અને રકાબી
૬)ઘોંઘાટ
૭)બાથટબમા માછલી
He wrote these all plays in his book "બાથટબમા માછલી". While reading the play "તરંગપાલ", I remembered the play Waiting for Godot written by Samuel Bucket. It has full of absurdity. There are two main characters in this play Vladimir and Estragon. They are waiting for Godot. Who is Godot and how he looks,they don't know.
They are just passing their time by doing some activities .like, Estragon is trying to pull out his boot and Vladimir do same thing with his hat. They decided to passing their time by hanging themselves from the tree but they can not decide who should go first. After that that they are passing their time with Lucky and Pozzo.
Here is some dialogues of Estragon and Vladimir,
Estragon: what about hanging ourselves?
Vladimir: hmmm. it'd give us an erection.
Estragon: we always find same thing, eh didi, to let us think we exit?
At the and of the play nothing is happens. Nobody comes, nobody goes, It's awful. So we can say that it is full absurdity.
In this play "તરંગપાલ" we find same things. There are also two main characters બાલ and લાલ. They are passing their time by asking some questions to each other. like,
બાલ : શુ સાભળે છે?
લાલ : પાયલ નો રણકાર, કોયલ નો પંચમ સૂર, સમુદ્ર નો ઘુંઘવાટ, કણસતુ મૌન.
બાલ : ખોટી વાત
લાલ : તો સાચુ શુ છે?
બાલ : સાચી ધરતી છે.
They are fighting with each other to know, Who is right and who is wrong. While they are fighting one person inter with 20/25 balloons, he wear "શ્વેત વસ્ત્રો". They asks him what is your name? He replied,
મારુ નામ પાલ.
પાલ કે ગોપાલ
મારુ ટૂંકુ નામ પાલ. પણ આખુ નામ તરંગ પાલ છે.
Here They don't know who is "પાલ ". we can imagine that pal and Gopal is name of Lord Krishna but there is symbols of election and "શ્વેતવસ્ત્રો" so we find the image of politicians. At the end of the play "પાલ" offer one Balloon to Lal and one balloon to pal and told them that,
લાલ તુ જીવનભર ઊધ્યા કરજે ; કેમકે ઊંઘ એ તરંગની માતા છે. જા.
બાલ લે આ ફૂગો તુ જીવનભર જાગજે.
અને જાગૃતિ નુ નાક દબાવી એને ગુગળાવજે. કેમેકે જાગ્રુતિ યે આડો આંક વાડીયો છે,
In these plays we find that at the ends nothing happens, Vladimir and Estragon are still waiting for Godot and, બાલ જીવનભર જાગે છે અને લાલ ઊધ્યા કરે છે.
So, after all I want to say that in both the play dialogues are same. Spoken for passing time. And unnecessary dialogues but through these we can understand the philosophy of our life. In our life also we are doing same things. So, foolish things telling us great things. And it is universal idea and that's why we can see in both the languages.
