Hello
friends,
This blog is a part of ELT classroom activity. my views on the following research paper are presented in this blog.
Socio-cultural dimensions of English as a second languages written by Rekha Aslam.
in this research paper Rekha Aslam has presented the link between the form of English language and the social structure and culture sensitivity of Indian culture. she has also describe that how English is made to fulfill the function of a second language.
Rekha Aslam has given the definition of second languages..
A second language,is a language which is one's own though not for the first in order of importance. nor usually the first to learner.
A second language is used as an alternative way of expressing a culture of one's own.
A second language produces bilinguals with active and creative and interest.
she has also highlighted some books, in which writers use words
which cannot translated In English.
- The dark room by
R.K.Narayan,
- Nector in a sleve by
Kamala Markandaya
- Fire on the mountain
by Anita Desai.
words like, saree -( the dress of the female). Dhoti - (the dress of the male). Kum Kum -(red powder used as a beauty mark by women).
at the end of this research paper we can say that it help us to see how the socio culture reality manifested at many levels of language organisation from borrowing, lone creations to idiom, metaphor, imagery symbolism and discourse imparts to English an Indian. This involves creativitvy - a role and fiction English is made to fulfill.
