English for specific purpose

Hello
    Readers,
                    This blog is a part of ELT classroom activity. My views on the following research paper are presented in this blog.
        English for specific purposes written by Tony Dudley Evans.

English for specific purposes:
                                English for specific purpose is a branch of english language teachings. It has developed its own approachs, materials and methodology and is generally seen as a very active, even 'feisty' movment that has had considerable influnce over the more genral activities of TESOL and applied linguistics.

Defination of ESP:
                                The key defining feature of ESP is that its teaching and materials are founded on the results of need analysis. Robinson ,in her first overview of ESP (1980), suggested that limited duration (i.e an intensive course of a fixed length) and adult lernersn are defaining features of ESP courses. In her secound survey she accept that, althoug many ESP courses are of limited duration , a significant number are not (e.g a three or four year programe as part  of a university degree) and , while it is true that the majority of ESP learners are adults, ESP can be taught at school. so we can say that ESP is for adult learners.

 characteristics of ESP as follows:
·       ESP is designed to meet the specific needs of the learner.
·       ESP makes use of the underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves.
·       ESP is centerd on the language ( grammer, lexis, register),skills, discourse, and genres appropriate to these activities.

Classification:
            AS with branches  of TESOL and applied linguastics,ESP is often divided up into various categories with mystries acronyms. It is usally classified into two categories;
  1)English for acadmic purpose
  2) English for occupational purpose
    ESP leargely speaks for itself; it relate to the English needed in an educational context, usually at a university or similar institution, and possibaly also at school level. EOP is more complicated : it relates to proffessional purpose, e.g those of working doctores , engineer, or business people. the biggest branch of EOP is business English , the teaching of which can range from teaching general business related vocabulary  to the teaching of specific skills impoetant in business, e,g negotiation and meeting skills.

    so at the end  of this research paper (English for specific purpose)we can say that ESP is impoetant branch of English language teaching. ESP teacher is envisaged by those who argue that ESP teaching should be concerned with rights analysis is as well as needs analysis. ESP teacher is working closely with the subject teacher ( either together in the classroom or out side in planing clases), the ESP teacher should not act just as interpreter of the way that the subject teacher communication information in lectures or his\her priorities in maeketing assignments\examination answer. She suggest that ESP should develop an awerness in ESP students of how they can assert their rights, e.g insisting on asking quistions about points the lecturer has not made clear.
