Hey friends,
This blog is a part of my classroom activity. If I were a structuralist how would I analyse a piece of literature or art.
Structuralism is a method of interpretation and analysis of every aspect of human behavior and culture. In literature, we have also the method of Structuralism to interpret the text with various perspectives.Structuralism is related with the structure of the novel, video, serial, etc. But main thing is that we must have to focus on the structure. Structuralist critics like Ferdinand Saussure, Gerard Genette , Roland Barthes, Claude Levi-Strauss etc ., gave their immense contribution in this approach.
Here I have selected one video here which is very famous but it
is large so I can't put it here. So this is just an image

Using the
Saussurian linguistic model, Claude Levi-Strauss says:-
"a girl and a boy fall in love (a "formula" with a symbolic
operator between them would be "Boy + Girl") despite the fact that
they belong to two groups that hate each other ("Boy's Group - Girl's
Group" or "Opposing forces") and conflict is resolved by their
death.
The
versatility of structuralism is such that a literary critic could make the same
claim about a story of two friendly families ("Boy's Family + Girl's
Family") that arrange a marriage between their children despite the fact
that the children hate each other ("Boy - Girl") and then the
children commit suicide to escape the arranged marriage; the justification is
that the second story's structure is an 'inversion' of the first story's
structure: the relationship between the values of love and the two pairs of
parties involved have been reversed."
Using this approach I would like to analyse this particular image.
In this
video we can see the story related with as usual in many literature and movies
like Romeo and Juliet and Ishqzade, Raam-Leela,Ek Duje ke Liye etc. As same in this video also story is
like same that in the end lovers committed suicide. And also we can see
duration that many years passes in one line. So that thing also we can see in
this video. we can say that all the love stories mostly have the similar structure but the style of presenting these stories is different.
